Original light blue cloth binding with gilt lettering on spine and front board. Dust-jacket sustained water damage, light foxing, scuffing, minor tearing. Some wear and fading to spine ends. Dirt on page edges, and interior pages. Interior contains a few light pencil notations, pages are wrinkled, and there is water staining to fore-edge and the bottom of some pages. This is volume twenty-four in a set of 27 that contain letters and documents written by Hamilton, letters to Hamilton, and documents that concern Hamilton but were not written by or to him. All documents are presented in chronological order. In this volume, Hamilton, in his capacity as inspector general of the army, completed a detailed plan for the organization and administration of a proposed military academy, supervised the preparation of a system of tactics for the different branches of the army, conducted inquiries on the length and speed of the pace for infantrymen, and prepared a “Plan for the Formation of a Regiment for Exercise or Battle.” At the request of James McHenry, Hamilton drafted several acts concerning the education and organization of military corps. This volume also includes John Adam’s decision to purge his cabinet of Hamilton’s principal supporters in the government, including dismissing Pickering and forcing McHenry’s resignation, and Hamilton’s trip to New England in June 1800.
