No known marginalia. James G. Swan, (1818-1900) was an American Indian Agent (authorized to interact with tribes by the U.S. government) in the Washington Territory and pacific northwest coast. The book contains quite a bit of observation and knowledge about the indigenous peoples of the pacific northwest, including building methods and canoe manufacturing, medicinal plants and animal products in use, fishing and fish-preparation, games, songs, and amusements, and other customs. The book also describes the physical territory and the government activity there, as well as Swan’s own experiences traveling, sea otter-hunting, in a bear fight, and much more. The book contains a glossary/vocabulary of Chehalis and Chenook terminology. 435 pages plus publisher’s list. Hardcover, good condition, octavo.
